And we have words that drop the Y, such as sky to skies.

There are lots of fun rules for plurals and these cut-and-paste plural activities are a great one for working on when to add s or es. This week we started a whole new adventure in our literacy journey. For the past few years, our lessons have focused on learning syllable types that will help us read and spell words. But this week, we are focusing on a rule that mainly helps with spelling. We are working on when do you add an “s” to a plural word vs when you need to add an “es” with this free printable plural es worksheet for grade 1.

Other times, we add an es.

And that is what this activity is all about.

When do we add that es.

ch - When a word ends in a ch, we add an es, such as churches or lunches
sh - Another digraph that needs an “es” is the “sh”. Words like bushes and wishes are just a few examples. Be careful though the plural of fish is usually fish.
o - In most words that end in a consonant and then an o, you add an es. For example, you have potatoes and tomatoes. Like many English rules, this has some exceptions like photos or pianos.
x - Another easy one is words that end in x, you get to add an “es”. Foxes, axes, and taxes are great examples of this.
s or ss - If a word ends with s or ss, you get another chance to add that “es”. Check out the words like gases, buses, glasses, or dresses.
Z - Yep, this guy is always last. But if a word ends in a z or a double zz due to the floss rule, you have to add the “es”. Buzzes and freezes are two fun examples.

We wrote this on a whiteboard, and I reminded my little girl of any ones she forgot.

Then I had her cut out the coins.

Next, we read the words.

Then I would ask her if I should add the s or the es.

If she couldnt remember, I would ask her what did the word end in.

We would then look on the white board.
